I suspect something got broken for ads. You can call that "crippling" if you wish, I do, but other opinions differ.

I've noticed YouTube doing a lot of work to try to run ads even when blockers and stuff are trying to stop them from running.

I loathe watching YouTube videos on iPads nowadays.
